Names & Games
Setup: Before the class exists at all: signed parental consent and a health questionnaire for every under-18 on file, and you know about asthma, inhalers and anything flagged — inhalers live at the side of the room, not in bags in a locker. House rules set in the first minute, warmly and only once: phones in the basket (they time the class, you time the phones), nobody lifts to show off, and the difference between muscle burn and pain gets taught tonight — burn is welcome, pain in a joint means stop and tell the coach, no drama attached. Cones out in a 10-metre square.
How it works: Straight into a game — teenagers warm to games and freeze at lectures. Two rounds of cone tag inside the square: one catcher, tagged players do five air squats to re-enter. Then rock-paper-scissors squat battles in pairs — loser of each throw does two squats, winner celebrates modestly or does them anyway. Learn every name during the games and use each one at least once before block two; a named teenager behaves like a member, an anonymous one behaves like a visitor.
What to say
- “Phones in the basket — the group chat will survive 45 minutes, I checked.”
- “Muscle burn is the good stuff; anything sharp or in a joint, you stop and tell me — that's strength, not weakness.”
- “Nobody here is impressive yet and that's the whole point of a first class.”
- “Tag with your hand, not your shoulder — we're warming up, not trialling for the county.”
Easier
Walking tag; squats to a high bench.
Harder
Shrink the square each round; squat battles go best-of-five.
