From Miles to Muscles

RPE 3

Setup: Mats in rows with a clear metre beside each for swinging legs. Open with the sales pitch this crowd needs to hear, because runners attend strength class the way cats attend baths: running is thousands of single-leg hops in a row, so tonight is not a day off running — it is the class that buys next year's miles. Ask who is racing soon and who is nursing anything; niggled calves and grumpy knees get named now, not discovered mid-lunge.

How it works: Runner-specific from the first minute: leg swings front-and-back then side-to-side with a hand on the wall, ankle circles, twenty slow calf pumps, walking knee hugs down the mat, and open-the-gate hip circles back. Finish with two rounds of five slow air squats and five hip hinges — the two shapes the whole night is built from.

What to say

  • Swing the leg, not the torso — the pillar stays quiet while the pendulum works.
  • These calves have a job tonight — wake them gently now, thank me later.
  • Tell me about the niggle before the class finds it for you.

Easier

Halve all swings; squats to a bench.

Harder

Add ten walking lunges at the end, unweighted and unhurried.
